When “No” is Really a Redirection: Finding Meaning in Career Setbacks
One of the hardest moments in my career came during what I thought would be a turning point.
I was teaching in a one-year-only position at a community college, and when the permanent position was posted, I felt ready. My students loved me. My colleagues supported me. The search committee even selected me as their top choice.
But the president chose someone else. Someone who—at least on paper—fit the checkboxes a little better.
I was devastated. 💔
That rejection shook me. I questioned my worth. I replayed every “what if” and wrestled with impostor thoughts: Maybe I wasn’t really good enough. Maybe I didn’t belong here after all.
But here’s what I couldn’t see in the moment: if I had gotten that job, I may never have gone on to become a dietetics program director. I wouldn’t have had the chance to mentor the hundreds of students I’ve worked with over the past decade. And I wouldn’t have been pushed to grow into the leader and professional I am today.
✨ Sometimes the “no” we fear most is really just a redirection toward something greater.
For many dietitians—maybe even you—that’s the real challenge of career alignment. We pour our hearts into roles that seem like they should be our dream jobs, only to find ourselves burned out, under-supported, or undervalued. When doors close, it can feel crushing.
But those very moments of disillusionment often become our compass. They help us realign with our strengths, values, and the work that actually fuels our sense of purpose.
That’s why I created Reignite—a mini-course designed to help you move through impostor thoughts, rediscover your “why,” and start finding career satisfaction on your own terms. Because you deserve to feel confident and fulfilled in your work, not stuck replaying every “no.”
